Though some dismiss The Green Mile as overly sentimental, overlong and even perpetuating unpleasant racial stereotypes, there is an emotionally devastating, not to mention incredibly acted, tale at its core.
As a prison officer and mentally challenged murder-rape convict respectively, Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan (who received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod for his work) light up the screen in a film that could so easily have collapsed under its own bombast and portent, but somehow manages to hold together over a stamina-testing 189 minutes.
Yes, it's too long and rather on-the-nose in places, but if you claim you weren't a sobbing wreck the first time you saw it, you're probably lying.
