The Wolf's Call, or Le Chant du loup in the original French, is a much more recent addition to the submarine genre. One that returns to the high-stakes, tense and political backdrop that many deep sea adventures have called home. Directed by Antonin Baudry - a diplomat by trade - The Wolf's Call centres on a submarine's sonar officer who has to use his acute sense of hearing to track down a French ballistic missile submarine, and end the threat of a nuclear war.

It's an ambitious, fast-paced and intelligent film that spans several vessels and stories, yet never feels overburdened. While some of the plot ingredients may feel familiar for fans of submarine thrillers, Baudry nevertheless excels with a budget many times smaller than an equivalent Hollywood film would be given.

The commitment to gritty realism and the looming threat of war prove that the traditional ingredients of a submarine movie are far from outdated. All it takes is the right story and the right people working their magic both on and off the camera to remind you about what makes these films so entertaining and unique.
