5. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Jack Sparrow, Jack Norrington and Will Turner atop that spinning wheel is the pinnacle of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. The movies have been rocky recently, with the third having big flaws and the fourth and fifth each being forgettable.
Rather than focus on the negatives that came afterwards though, now is the time to focus on the magnificent positives this scene brought. Pirates has one of the most memorable scores in modern cinema, and it was never put to better use than in this scene.
Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Jack Sparrow is absolutely bursting with personality, and it comes across fantastically in this scene. Depp’s always channelled body language into his most recognisable characters, and nowhere is that put to better use than here.
The film has lost its sense of identity over the last few movies. But Dead Man’s Chest knew it was a family action adventure affair, and this sword fight epitomises that. It’s swashbuckling at its finest. The blend of action and comedy is perfect and all three characters are wonderfully balanced in the scene. A reminder of what could have been for Pirates.
