10 Best Times Actors Played Themselves
5. Danny McBride - This Is The End
Seth Rogen’s apocalyptic comedy is built around actors playing themselves. Some run with their public image (James Franco as a pretentious weirdo), others reinvent themselves (Jonah Hill as a delightfully prissy creep).
Danny McBride, though, gets to turn himself into a full on monster. As himself, he’s roundly similar the the type of character he usually plays: he’s brash, profane, full of unearned confidence and barely disguised self loathing.
It’s a character type McBride can play in his sleep, but few can do it better than he does. He’s always able to find a layer of pathos to even his most oafish creations, including himself.
McBride keeps the film ticking, preventing it from becoming just a chance for Rogen and pals to muck about in a big house. One of the best comedy performers around, he can make just about anything funny. He’s the movie’s antagonist, but he’s by far the most compelling presence, from his slo-mo intro to his eventual comeuppance.
