4. Victim/Suspect

The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker
Netflix

Nancy Schwartzman's Sundance Film Festival entry Victim/Suspect focuses on the real-life tales of numerous women who ultimately found themselves in handcuffs after attempting to report sexual assaults to the police. Victim/Suspect analyzes the sickening failings of the police officers involved in these cases - individuals who pressured these victims into recanting their statements, before subsequently arresting them for making a false accusation.

Presenting an unflinching examination of sexual assault and rape culture, Schwartzman's evocative production explores the pervasiveness of these issues within society. The timing of the documentary's message has never been more appropriate - the relationship between women and the police is an issue of seismic social relevance in 2023. One has to look no further than the revolting abuse of power exhibited during the vigils for Sarah Everard - incidentally, a woman murdered by a serving police officer.

Victim/Suspect pays tribute to the appalling struggles of the women involved in these heartbreaking miscarriages of justice, inviting relevant social debate by calling attention to the damage inflicted by these incidents in a thoughtful and measured manner.
