10 Best Wilderness Horror Movies

2. The Hills Run Red

Eliza Dushku Wrong Turn
Warner Bros

Released in 2009, The Hills Run Red is easily the most underrated film on this list - as evidenced by the fact that most readers probably haven't even heard of this one. It's a shame, as the film's slasher story outdoes the same year's more predictable and anodyne hits such as Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine.

Then again, this one is neither a remake nor full of gory 3D gimmickry, so maybe it never stood a fighting chance with audiences.

The Hills Run Red is full of sharp commentary on the state of horror filmmaking. Disturbing and clever in equal measure, this slasher gives the wilderness horror subgenre a meta remix as its heroes run afoul of a baby-masked killer whilst seeking out a copy of the possibly mythical scariest film to ever exist.

One guess what the title of said film is.

Stylish despite its low budget, this one is filled with tense chase sequences and inventive kills, and actually has plenty to say about horror's tendency to return to old hits rather than branching out in order to scare audiences. Take note, Wrong Turn 7.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
