10 Big 2020 Movies You Should Be Worried About
9. Richard Jewell
Richard Jewell is Clint Eastwood’s latest movie, and initial critical reviews heap praise upon the film. With a reliable hand at the helm, a compelling story and good early buzz, there doesn’t seem too much reason to worry. However, there’s been considerable controversy generated too.
The film tells the story of the titular Richard Jewell, a real life American security guard who helped foil a terrorist bomb plot at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. However, the event was badly misreported at the time, and Jewell ended up being labelled a terrorist himself by the press.
It promises to be a gripping tale, with Jewell played by surprise I, Tonya breakout star Paul Walter Hauser, and a supporting cast of Sam Rockwell, Jon Hamm, Kathy Bates and Olivia Wilde. It’s Wilde who’s causing the controversy, with her character being a reporter who sleeps with a source for information; an entirely fictitious event.
Even in real life stories, you except that a film take some artist liberties. I, Tonya is as good an example of that as any. Wilde’s character has already been dismissed by many as an overly lazy plot device though, and the controversy could pump the breaks on the film’s momentum.
