10 Big Films From 2013 You've Probably Already Forgotten About

3. R.I.P.D.

U.S. Release Date: July 19th What was this about again? A slain police officer gets recruited to join a team of undead police officers who all work for the Rest In Peace Department, while there, he attempts to find the man who killed him. The only memorable aspect of "R.I.P.D." is that, for a second, it made the producers of "The Lone Ranger" feel slightly better about themselves. Made with a $130 million budget, "R.I.P.D." did not just flop, it was dead on arrival. And while it's easily the biggest flop of the year, it qualifies for this list because of how it flopped. It landed at #7 at the box office on its opening weekend, and two weeks later, it was playing in less than 500 theaters. Unlike "The Lone Ranger" and "After Earth," it did not get much help internationally, grossing only $33.6 million in the US and $78 million overall. There are no lingering questions as to why this movie did badly, it had no chance from the start. First of all, it was a blatant rip-off of the "Men In Black" movies and, worst of all, nobody in the movie looked like they wanted to be there. The movie screamed "flop" from the beginning, which is why it's easy to forget that this movie exists. That's an incredible feat for a movie that cost so much money to make. Coincidentally, director Robert Schwentke's previous film was "Red" and the sequel to that movie came out the very same weekend as "R.I.P.D." It's not known if Schwentke had the option to direct "Red 2," but he probably wishes he did now.
