The wee hours of this morning brought the news that audiences had been clamouring for for years - even more so after all of those emails leaks: Sony is bringing Spider-Man back home. Sort of. It was announced that future instalments in the Spider-Man franchise would be produced in collaboration with Marvel Studios, albeit with Sony still retaining all creative control. It's a pretty landmark event in movie history, and good news for Marvel. Since setting themselves up as an independent entity that can make their own films fine and well, thank you very much, they've been trying to reclaim all those rights they sold off during darker periods a decade or so earlier. The ground breaking agreement with Sony means bringing Spidey into their Shared Cinematic Universe. Which is all awesome news! But how exactly did they even get to this point? At one time, the Spider-Man movies were the gold standard of superhero flicks, quality and box office-wise. Since the third film though, the franchise seems to have been on a downward spiral. There's no doubt that bowing to the superior power of Marvel is going to do well for the films in the long run, but how exactly did things get so bad?
