10. Dreaming Of A White Oscars
It's hard, especially given the racially charged political climate in the United States at the moment, to overlook the giant elephant in the room. This is a super white Oscar season. Like, really really white. This year, every single acting nominee is white, something that's happened only one other time since the turn of the century (in 2011). Hell, there's not even anyone nominated who looks like they could get a tan. But let's look at the other categories. If you go through some of the other major awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, the only person nominated who isn't lily white is famed Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (up for both Best Director and Best Screenplay for his work in Birdman). Now, is it possible that there could be a year where there just no stand-out performances from people of color? Well, given the quality of the roles usually written for them, sure, maybe. Is that what happened this year? Not by a long shot.
