Disney might be the biggest family entertainment brand in the galaxy, but when it comes to defending its intellectual property, even a bunch of kids swinging lightsabers around aren't safe from its mighty legal fist.

In 2016, the now Disney-owned Lucasfilm filed a lawsuit against Lightsaber Academy, which, as the name suggests, aimed to teach people how to wield those elegant Jedi weapons. But since its owner, Michael Brown, didn't have Lucasfilm or Disney's permission to do this, it's no surprise that the two corporations took umbridge with his particular line of business.

"Defendants are in the business of promoting, producing, offering for sale and selling unauthorized 'Lightsaber' classes, which purport to teach students how to use 'Lightsabers' and/or perform as 'Jedi'", read the lawsuit.

Lucasfilm sought a permanent injunction and actual damages and profits, or, alternatively, up to $2 million in damages for each infringed trademark.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
