6. Nike’s Budget - Air

As well as a movie about a phone, 2023 also saw one made about a type of shoe. And people say Hollywood is running out of ideas.

Air, directed by Ben Affleck who also starred alongside Matt Damon, Viola Davis, and Jason Bateman, chronicles the formation of the partnership between Nike and Michael Jordan, which ultimately led to the creation of the incredibly famous Air Jordan.

Sneakers are big business these days, so it makes sense to talk about the one that helped start it all, but then again, it’s a movie about a shoe...

One of the key moments in Air comes when Phil Knight, Nike’s co-founder played by Affleck, assigns the company’s basketball division’s entire budget to the task of signing Jordan. In the film, the number is given as $250,000, whereas in reality, they had a lot more to play with.

The budget was actually $2.5 million spread across five years, which amounts to half-a-million dollars a year. The film clearly slashed the figure to make it seem more impressive that they got Jordan, but this decision came at the cost of its integrity.

Can’t put a price on that.
