10 Biggest Missed Opportunities In MCU History

8. Nick Fury Loses His Eye

Prior to Captain Marvel's release, one of the longest running unanswered questions in the MCU was the cause of Nick Fury's (Samuel L. Jackson) lost eye and consequent decision to don an eyepatch.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury memorably said, "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye," and so when it became clear that Captain Marvel would center around the shape-shifting Skrulls, it seemed damn-near certain that one of them would disguise themselves as one of Fury's allies - perhaps even Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) herself - and cause his ocular injury.

But ultimately an intriguingly mysterious part of Fury's past resolved into a throwaway joke, when in the movie it was revealed that Fury's eye was damaged by the feline-looking alien Flerken, Goose, who scratched him in the face.

Though it's certainly amusing that Fury is left embarrassed by the cause of his injury and promptly covers it up, taking a genuinely compelling aspect of Fury's mythology and boiling it down to a silly gag, and one where Fury seems oddly un-bothered by the injury itself, left many fans understandably annoyed.
