10 Biggest Movie And TV News This Week (June 7)

1. Josh Trank Will Direct A Star Wars Spinoff

While Marvel is currently fumbling around with Ant-Man, Disney's other mega-franchise seems to be doing just fine. Star Wars: Episode VII is in production, but the House of Mouse is already setting their sights on the upcoming spin-off movies, which will arrive in the years between official "Episodes" in the saga. The first spin-off will be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards, for release in December 2016. The second, slated for 2018, will be directed by Chronicle's Josh Trank! Trank is a great choice for a Star Wars movie, and a director currently on the rise. His found footage directorial debut was a big hit, and landed him the directing gig for Fox's Fantastic Four reboot. Once he's done with that film, he'll hop into a starfighter and bring a new Star Wars film to life, though we're still not sure which one it will be. Rumor has it that Edwards may be making a Boba Fett movie; so will Trank be making a Han Solo or Yoda spin-off? Only time will tell. Here's what Kathleen Kennedy had to say about Trank's hiring:
€œWe're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family. He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.€
And as far as Trank's reaction?
€œThe magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.€
