10 Biggest Plot Twists In Star Wars History
8. Kylo Ren Is A Solo
When it was announced that the House of Mouse would be making a new Star Wars trilogy in 2012, fans were ecstatic they would be seeing their favourite characters return. This excitement was amplified when a trailer for The Force Awakens was released in 2014, in which a Dark Jedi, later revealed to be Kylo Ren, dominated the discourse amongst fans.
Eventually, it was announced that Adam Driver would be playing the role, though Ren's true identity was kept a secret up until the film's arrival to cinemas in 2015, where he was presented to be the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa.
As the picture progresses, Kylo's dark bond with his heritage and parentage is continually strained, reaching the heartbreaking climax of Ren murdering his father in an effort to honour his grandfather, Darth Vader. Speaking at a post-screening Q&A session at the Writers Guild of America, director J. J. Abrams, spoke about the decision to kill Han Solo.
From Abrams, "Star Wars had the greatest villain in cinema history. So, how you bring a new villain into that world is a very tricky thing. We knew we needed to do something bold. The only reason why Kylo Ren has any hope of being a worthy successor is because we lose one of the most beloved characters".
