6. Eraserhead

David Lynch's first feature film is a very disturbing movie with no easy answers and plenty of strange scenes. This has been business as usual with Lynch for close to 40 years now but the black and white nature of Eraserhead is something that he has never returned to even though the subject matter is strikingly similar to his greatest films in colour. This gives it a distinct feeling when watched alongside his other movies which makes the lack of colour stand out even more. The story concerns a man, Henry Spencer, his reptilian offspring and his wife leaving him. While the narrative is very bizarre the black and white photography gives Eraserhead a heartbreaking element to its themes of parental confusion and abandonment. The viewer feels for Henry when he is stuck taking care of something that isn't human which is something the film would lack if it were in colour.
