10 Blatantly Racist Movies

4. Song of the South

Looking back through even the very best films Disney ever made, there's a nasty streak of underlying racism cutting through their canon, and in no film is it more clearly realised than the hugely controversial Song of the South, which to this day has still not been released in its entirety in the US over concerns about the furore it would cause. Set in the post-Civil War period, the film largely centres around the above image; a jovial, black storyteller regaling two young white children, and while the image might suggest its noble intentions, in glossing over the truth of slavery, it feels woefully misjudged. The mixture of animation with live action is further problematic; no film can aim to broach the subject in such a light while playing fast-and-loose with the horrors that actually occurred at the time. Unfortunately, it's just one of those embarrassing, fascinating relics that, thankfully, wasn't released to poison a generation of children's minds.
