10 Bleak Movies With Unexpectedly Happy Endings

6. Toy Story 3

Pixar

Last childrens movie, promise. But then, how could this movie not end up on this list somewhere? Toy Story 3 is - by this point - infamous for being easily one of the saddest films in the entire Pixar library.

And rest assured, that threshold is vast. For those of you not in the know, this movie centers around the toys, after having been locked away in Andy's toy box for almost a decade, now staring down either a lifetime in the attic, or a significantly shorter amount of time in a trash compactor. However, due to shenanigans, they get stuck in a day care center. Which then turns out to be somehow worse than either of those two options.

And yet, when Woody continues to want to return to Andy, the characters, as well as the film, continue to beat him over the head with the fact that that dream is impossible. Toy Story 3, like the previous two films, is all about acceptance of the universe's unfairness and mortality.

But 3 brings it all to a head. But then remembers right at the end to have its fitting happy ending. Not a reset to zero, but a firm reinforcement that death doesn't have to be the end. Toy Story 3's ending isn't just happy, it's inspiring.
