10 Bleak Movies With Unexpectedly Happy Endings

Original Movie Alternate Endings 28 Days Later
Fox Searchlight

As was stated in the entry about The Road, when you're dealing with a film set in the post apocalypse, you can only get so happy an ending without burning all the credibility you'd built up beforehand at the stake.

Such is the case with 28 Days Later, who despite getting rid of the most optimistic of its endings before shooting a second of film (wherein a scientist cures the zombie plague by draining everyone of their blood. Seriously.) still managed to have its main characters get out shockingly okay, all things considered.

Though not for lack of trying on the film's part, as our heroes' little road trip takes them from a zombie infested London to a base run by Chris Eccleston and his army of macho army psychos. After slowly realizing that maybe - just maybe - the castle run by a delusional army commander isn't the safest place in the world, even when the alternative is zombies, our heroes proceed to hightail it out of there. Against all odds - and we do mean all odds - they manage to escape, with Eccleston having to contend with a bunch of very hungry zombies.

All's well that ends well. Not that anything in the world of 28 Days Later truly ends well. But it's fair to call this one a winner.
