6. SAW
Thanks to the law of diminishing returns and the seemingly endless amount of sequels to this movie, it is easy to forget that the original SAW was actually a pretty well-crafted and well-directed horror-thriller. With future horror-maestro James Wan at the helm, SAW takes place largely in a disgusting bathroom where two men, Dr Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight wake up to find themselves chained to opposite ends of the room. In the centre of the room lays a dead body, blood pooling around him.
The original SAW does a good job of keeping you engaged as its two protagonists try to feel one another out, never knowing if they should trust one another or not. Eventually, after his family are threatened by Jigsaw, Dr Gordon saws off his foot and crawls out of the bathroom, promising to send help.
Before help can arrive however, the seemingly dead body on the floor stands up and reveals himself to be Jigsaw. The key to the chains was in the bathtub all along, but had been washed down the drain when Adam pulled the plug right at the beginning of the movie. Jigsaw seals the door, leaving Adam screaming in the pitch blackness.
