10 Blistering Films About Self Destruction

3. Woyzeck (1979)

woyzeck Klaus Kinski gives a tour de force performance as forty year old Franz Woyzeck, a man in a very lowly position in the Polish army and who constantly has to deal with a lot of heavy crap heaped on him. Throughout the movie he gets provocation after provocation from those around him. Especially from his Captain who talks a load of guff to him. Saints would have their patience tested by what Woyzeck has to endure. Eventually, he inevitably cracks up and destroys his life - bursting in an explosion of slo mo violence against his cheating wife, an act that not only snuffs out her life but condemns him as well. You could play a good guessing game as to when Woyzeck is going to explode in the film. Kinski gives such a portrayal of the man as to make his breakdown understandable and frighteningly real. Herzog and Kinski had a long artistic partnership, but apparently this film made a huge impression on Kinski's already unstable psyche. However it is difficult to see any other actor but Kinski fulfil the part. He is a European Marlon Brando.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
