10 Blockbuster Movies Way Too Desperate For A Sequel

10. The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2

The Amazing Spider-Man was Sony's rushed attempt to keep ahold of the rights to the character, but with a talented cast and a bit of thought it ended up being OK (read: not terrible). Realising they needed to keep things going, however, the film had a series of plot threads worked in to give plenty of material for eventual sequels. The death of Peter's parents, everything with Oscorp and, most egregiously, Uncle Ben's killer were all discreetly shelved for the exploration later on. The former two originally played a bigger part of the film, but were cut to drag out the mystery, but the thing that really riled up fans was Ben Parker. A key part of the character in the comics, skirting around it served to make Spider-Man a lot less interesting; the guilt Peter Parker feels over his father-figure's murder is the entire point of the character. The sequel didn't improve things much; Oscorp was still kept vague and Uncle Ben's killer wasn't even mentioned. There was a sense of a self-contained plot, but most of its storylines were left dangling ready to be picked up by The Sinister Six. It's the effect of The Avengers impacting here; every superhero property is now going for overarching mythology, but they ignore the simple fact that each of the MCU's films are strong on their own too. Did it work? The Sinister Six, Venom and two further Spider-Man films were already green-lit, although if things keep going this way they are another reboot may be arriving soon.
