10 Blockbusters From 2017 That Should Win Oscars (But Won't)

1. War For The Planet Of The Apes (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor & Best Visual Effects)

Why It Should Win: War for the Planet of the Apes isn't merely the best film of the summer, it's the best film of the year so far bar none.

From Matt Reeves' incredible direction through to Andy Serkis' magnificent central performance and the jaw-dropping visual effects, it really feels like time for the franchise to get its due.

Why It Won't: For starters, the populist Best Director slot will probably go to Christopher Nolan this year, while there's still a lot of ambivalence among voters about the eligibility of digitally-assisted performances in acting categories.

Plus, while both previous Apes movies were nominated for Best Visual Effects, neither actually scooped the win (losing to Hugo and Interstellar respectively), so history dictates that War will also bafflingly get pipped to the post.

A Best Picture nomination is definitely possible, but a win? There's no chance the Academy can agree on giving the big one to a film about sentient apes going to war with humanity. Just...no.

Which 2017 blockbusters are most deserving of some Oscar love? Shout them out in the comments!
