10 Blockbusters From 2017 That Should Win Oscars (But Won't)
5. Atomic Blonde (Best Cinematography)
Why It Should Win: Quite possibly the best-shot film of the summer, Atomic Blonde is a beautifully-rendered action film, in large part thanks to Jonathan Sela's exceptional framing and lightning.
From the bleak, chilly, washed-out exterior Berlin visuals to the warm, crackling neon interiors, it's a gorgeous effort from first minute to last, and is of course topped by that superbly-executed and totally unforgettable mid-film "single take" action sequence.
Why It Won't: Two words: Roger Deakins. Deakins is about 1000% certain to receive his 14th Best Cinematography nomination for Blade Runner 2049, and considering how disgustingly overdue he is for a win, the Academy will most likely give it to him even if he somehow isn't deserving.
As wondrous an achievement as Atomic Blonde's visuals are, it's hard to feel that bad about getting beaten out by arguably the world's best-living cinematographer.
