10 Blockbusters From 2017 That Should Win Oscars (But Won't)
3. Logan Lucky (Best Original Screenplay)
Why It Should Win: Steven Soderbergh's terrific new heist caper has by far one of the sharpest and most memorable scripts of any movie this year, and considering that his screenwriter "Rebecca Blunt" has no other film credits, it's pretty fair to assume that it's Soderbergh once again working under a pseudonym.
In a summer of familiar superhero movies and tentpoles, Logan Lucky was a wholly unique effort, driven forward by its compelling characters and oddball humour. The extended Game of Thrones gag alone should be enough to win it the Oscar, really.
Why It Won't: There are so, so many strong contenders here, and it's likely that "Ms. Blunt" will get beaten out by either Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread), the Coen Brothers (Suburbicon), Woody Allen (Wonder Wheel) or Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor (Downsizing), to name just a few of the strongest rivals.
Plus, the film's disappointing box office is only going to hurt it further, especially as most of its competitors are far more likely to be financially successful. What a shame.
