10 Body Horror Movies That'll Make You Squirm
1. Videodrome
Who better to finish off this list than the man himself? Although The Fly is fantastic, Videodrome shows Cronenberg’s creativity at its peak. One of his weirder films, the 1983 production stars James Wood and Debbie Harry… yes, Blondie’s Debbie Harry.
Videodrome has the highest budget of any Cronenberg film to date – and for good reason. For a film about technology, the effects are as slimy and fleshy as any zombie flick. The body horror that sees tech and flesh merging together looks like it’s been ripped from H. R. Giger’s sketchbook.
The revulsion here comes from opposites. Biological matter is the polar opposite to cold technology. So, the body merging with machines is about as unnatural as it can get. The sight of a video tape being pushed into Max’s VCR torso is an image that will stick with a viewer for a long time.
The other aspect of body horror that the film deals with surrounds the sensationalist nature of the programs shown in Videodrome. Max’s job is to find brutal programming to put on his TV station, which makes damaged bodies a kind of currency to him as opposed to living people.
It’s not until he experiences the nature of body horror first-hand that the twisted images of Videodrome start to plague his waking nightmares.
If you want to see creative body horror, deadly conspiracies, and Debbie Harry as a sexy television, then watch Videodrome.
