10 Box Office Failures That Are Actually Brilliant
6. Treasure Planet
The early 2000s wasn't a great period for Walt Disney Pictures - though there were underrated classics like Lilo & Stitch and The Emperor's New Groove, there were also underwhelming efforts like Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Dinosaur, which paled in comparison to recent '90s gems like Hercules, Mulan, and Tarzan. Treasure Planet was the only movie from Disney's dodgy early 2000s disaster period that failed to make its budget back, though: it grossed just $110 million against a cost of $140 million, marking it out as the House of Mouse's first big flop in a long time. Which, quite frankly, is a sad state of affairs, given just how creative and brilliant Treasure Planet really is. A sci-fi retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, Treasure Island, it's still a mystery as to what, exactly, turned audiences away from this relentless, visually stunning vision of the future (though the likelihood is that Pixar were dominating the scene with CGI-rendered films, whilst Disney clung to traditional animation - people wanted different). But Treasure Planet is funny, has great characters, and includes some of the best set-pieces Disney have ever drawn.
