10 Box Office Hits You Forgot Even Existed
6. The Intern
The Intern is exactly the type of frothy, lightweight fluff that writer/director Nancy Meyers is best known for, and as such the filmmaker brings a built-in fanbase to virtually all of her movies. The mind behind What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give, The Holiday and It's Complicated is right in her wheelhouse here; a late-year comedy to entice the older generation back to the theater now that blockbuster season is over. And on that level, it definitely works.
Romcom stalwart Anne Hathaway is on familiar ground here, but the real surprise comes from the unexpectedly great performance from Robert De Niro, with the two actors making a surprisingly engaging double-act in a genre that the latter isn't exactly known for. It was even nominated for Best Comedy at the Teen Choice Awards in 2016. A Robert De Niro movie!
Brisk and unoffensive to the point of banality, The Intern nonetheless embarked on a strong run at the box office that saw it end up earning $194.5m. In fact, the disposable comedy made more money than Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight and Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies in a testament to the drawing power of the Nancy Meyers brand.
