10 Brilliant Horror Movie Concepts Not Taken Far Enough

7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

The Beach House 2019
New Line Cinema

That title alone promises so much... Fans expected a look into the life of a young Leatherface, how he became associated with the Hewitt Family and their history of crime right up until 1973 when discovered.

Unfortunately that isn't what we got. The film opens with a very effective sequence wherein an obese factory worker gives birth to the deformed Leatherface before promptly dying. Her child is rescued from a dumpster by kindly Mrs. Hewitt and... That's it. That's as much of a "beginning" as we get.

The rest of the film plays out very much like the 2003 remake, with a group of travellers falling victim to the psychotic family in 1969. Although the film answers some questions presented in the previous film, like how Monty lost his legs, it was not the tell-all origin story fans hoped for. Instead we get another by-the-numbers slasher film as our young cast discover the horrors of the Hewitt house and meet brutal fates one by one. Not the story of a little boy finding his chainsaw as the title seems to promise.

2017's Leatherface attempts to address some of these issues, presenting Leatherface as first a young boy and then a teenager in a state hospital. But it too fails to deliver on the promise of seeing how Leatherface became the babbling goon we all know and love. Leatherface instead spends most of its runtime playing out as a criminals-on-the-run action film.

So we still yearn for the ultimate Leatherface origin story... Sigh
