10 Brilliant Performances Trapped In Terrible Recent Movies
1. Betty Gilpin - Coffee & Kareem
The recently released Netflix Original buddy cop comedy Coffee & Kareem is...not good, to be kind.
Despite Ed Helms being perfectly cast as a bumbling cop who stumbles upon corruption within his department, it's ultimately an awkward and mostly unfunny stab at a thoroughly played-out genre.
There is an easy standout, though, and that's rising star Betty Gilpin, who hot off being the best thing about The Hunt also proves herself to be the single redeeming feature of this schlocky action-comedy.
Gilpin plays the ineffably arrogant Detective Linda Watts who - spoiler alert! - turns out to be a corrupt cop. Mercifully, much of the third act is centered around her scene-stealing, scenery-chewing, sexy-scary performance.
While most of the movie's crude one-liners resolutely fall flat, the unpredictable energy of Gilpin's performance results in pretty much Coffee & Kareem's single source of both humour and general entertainment value.
She knows precisely what the film needs to be, even if nobody else here is really pulling their weight. Between this and her strong work elevating The Hunt, she's clearly deserving of so, so much more.
