10 Broadway Musicals That Deserve The Big Screen Treatment

10. Spring Awakening

Launched on Broadway in 2006, this rock musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind€™s 1891 German play about adolescence is notable on this list for numerous reasons. It is the winner of 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score, and Book, and the production€™s original soundtrack won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2008. The show deals in considerable detail with controversial subjects including sexuality, abuse, and suicide, in the context of late 19th century German life. The original Broadway cast included Lea Michele (Glee) and Jonathan Groff (Glee, Disney€™s upcoming €œFrozen€). An adaptation was in the early stages of development as of late 2012, with director/producer McG and original songwriter Duncan Sheik involved in talks. So far in 2013, there is little concrete evidence of the project moving forward in the immediate future. Still, with the crossover success of Michele and Groff, as well as the behind the scenes influence of McG, it doesn€™t seem like much of a stretch to expect this Broadway coming of age rock phenomenon to be hitting our screens sometime in the next few years.
