10 Brutal Horror Movie Openings Nobody Saw Coming
5. Nightmare Hospital - Halloween 2 (2009)
Rob Zombie's Halloween II tends to get a lot of flack from fans of the genre. For many, it's either too sloppily made, too 'out-there', or too nihilistically brutal for its own good.
Although to some, that last facet is one of its biggest strengths.
Following directly on from the previous film, a battered and bloodied Laurie roams the streets in a traumatised haze, before being picked up by the police. We then cut to her being wheeled into surgery, shrieking uncontrollably about how she doesn't want to die. What follows is an incredibly icky surgery scene, as well as Michael escaping captivity via a nasty car crash.
Which is a pretty rough opening regardless, but the fun doesn't stop there folks, as once Laurie comes to after her surgery, she once again comes face-to-face with Michael, who in one of the most excessively violent stabbings ever put to film, murders a nurse in front of her. Running through the hospital, Laurie finds numerous scenes of carnage, including an entire pit of corpses.
The fact that the entire sequence is revealed to be a nightmare is a tad frustrating but given just how wild and gruesome the whole thing gets, it can be slightly forgiven.
