10 Campy Halloween Films To Enjoy This Season

1. Trick 'R Treat

Rocky Horror
Univesal Orlando

The horror anthology the Halloween franchise was probably meant to be, this delightful and genuinely terrifying film follows multiple storylines taking place within the same town on Halloween night.

Tied together by a mysterious and creepy, child-sized figure with a stitched up burlap pumpkin mask, called "Sam" (for Samhain, if you know your Halloween lore), Trick 'R Treat presents chills, blood, terrifyingly memorable makeup effects and costumes, and a healthy heaping of both suspense and jump scares.

Its comic book style of transitions and credits hearkens back to the horror comics that were staples of the comic book industry of the 1950s to the 1970s, and it never shies away from the deliciously campy setups for the supernatural and the terrifyingly human that make up its roster of villains and threats.

Sam himself is an iconic figure, the one who makes sure people follow the rules of Halloween everyone who celebrates it learned as kids.

This film, for all its merits, was given the shaft and forced into direct-to-video release despite being theatre-ready, so few people were able to enjoy it at the time. However, it remains one of the best campy horror classics, and deserves repeat viewing for the season.
