10 Cannes Film Festival Protests (That Had Nothing To Do With Shoes)

Croisette controversies without a stiletto in sight.

The controversies that crop up every year at the Cannes film festival might, at first glance, appear to be less than world-shatteringly deep. Past examples of outrage include that time a practical joker tried to set up house under the dress of actress America Ferrera. Then there was the time when Irina Shayk€™s retiring, but definitely not shy, décolleté was the subject of the year's hot protests. And let's not forget all the horrified statements levelled against director Felix can Groeningen and his actors, who decided to indulge in a nude promotional bike ride in 2009. This year€™s news du jour involved that all-riveting question €“ €œShould women be allowed to wear flats on the catwalk?€ €“ disguised as a deep gender issue, of course Oh yeah, and the absolutely heartrending news that taking selfies on the red carpet will get you booted out. Given all this, it would be totally unsurprising were we to reply with the word €˜shallow€™ every time €˜Cannes€™ came up in a word association game. Well, here are 10 instances when Cannes gave cause to protests, even though there wasn€™t a stiletto in sight.
