4. Starred Up

Palo Alto Emma Roberts
Fox Searchlight

When a film has as much rage as Starred Up, there's few better to play the lead than Jack O'Connell. In his best, most animalistic performance, O'Connell plays young offender Eric Love, 'promoted' to adult prison and striving to prove his manhood by lashing out at any who try to implement control.

There's a twist - Eric's dad Neville (Ben Mendelsohn, proving why he's one of the finest actors around right now) resides in the same prison Eric has been relocated to. But the film's nowhere near as cliched as that sounds, as director David Mackenzie shoots docu-style and works to uncover whatever truth there might be in ex-prison therapist Jonathan Asser's screenplay.

More than just a Scum for the 21st century, Starred Up is about a young man's need for a father figure, for affection in a world where he's been taught the only way to accept kindness is to fight against it. The ending stretches credibility, but everything that comes before is a searingly honest and tragic indictment of the British prison system.
