10 CGI Movie Moments NOBODY Noticed

2. The Basketballs - The Cable Guy

Mid-way through Jim Carrey's oddball dark comedy The Cable Guy, his deranged protagonist Chip Douglas shows up to play basketball with his pal Steven (Matthew Broderick), only for his aggressive, over-enthusiastic play style to firmly piss off all of Steven's other buddies.

But here's something you surely never realised - the two basketballs which Chip bounces around the court during the scene? Totally digital.

As it turns out, Carrey got to set and made it clear to director Ben Stiller that he had zero aptitude for basketball and couldn't even dribble a ball in a straight line.

And so, Stiller made the bold decision for a 1996 movie, to simply have Carrey pretend to play basketball, with the balls being added during post-production.

Now, while it's definitely easier to notice the slightly uncanny quality of the basketballs in the movie's more recent 4K release, it's also something you'd be hard-pressed to notice unless you knew about it beforehand.

For a film that's almost 30 years old, it's frankly astonishing how well the effect still passes the sniff test.
