10 Changes That Would Have Improved The Amazing Spider-Man 2

9. Saving The Goblin Arc For The Next Film

On the subject of villains, Electro's plight has a lot to do with the Green Goblin's appearance. While it doesn't reach the too-many-crooks-spoil-the-broth territory of Raimi's third effort, both villains definitely suffer from the others's presence. Electro's final throwdown is possibly the character's best moment, but it's too easily swept aside to give Dane DeHaan's Green Goblin some form of resolution instead. This scene deftly showcases a larger conundrum €“ what to do with Harry Osborn? The filmmakers were already fighting a losing battle because of his non-presence in the previous film. So instead, they threw him in here and rushed everything. For example, Osborn's introduced as Peter Parker's former-but-estranged best friend €“ presumably to counteract his invisibility first time round €“ and given a hereditary illness to battle against. Both these plot strands could've been ripe with dramatic potential, but they're badly fumbled here to make sure Harry becomes the Green Goblin by film's end. It's jarring that Peter and Harry go from estranged to besties in no time at all, and his drastic actions becoming the Goblin could be deemed as an overreaction €“ sure, he's terminally ill, but he's only 20, and the illness didn't claim his father until he was 63. $200 billion gives you plenty more options than grabbing a serum at gunpoint, is what we're saying. Obviously, everyone's playing catchup to the MCU, but throwing so much in to keep people around means you simply can't cover all bases. But the studio needn't be so worried €“ it's Spider-Man, people would probably turn up to watch him battle social anxiety. It'd be far better to just let the films breathe, and give each character more organically developing plotlines, and if they'd strung out the Goblin arc to reach its resolution in the third instalment, we would've got more from Electro as well as allowing Dane DeHaan a better developed journey.
