10 Changes That Would Have Improved The Amazing Spider-Man 2

5. Giving Aunt May Something To Do

More so than any other Spider-Man film before it, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 really didn't know what to do with Aunt May. To a certain extent, she's always been problematic €“ while she exists to keep Peter grounded, it's hard to write her doing anything other than fretting for her nephew. And so it proved it here, with Sally Field €“ an Oscar-nominated actress, no less €“ being given the thankless task of asking Peter about his laundry and generally turning a blind eye to what she must by now assume to be completely insane behaviour on his part. To the movie's credit, it does attempt to liven her up with a similar plotline to Spider-Man 2 €“ she's broke, struggling to fund Peter going to college and re-training as a nurse to solve that problem. Unfortunately, it only gives one scene to this compelling train of thought (presumably scotching it in favour of more weird asides) and in hindsight you can tell the only reason she's trained as a nurse (and not, say, a legal assistant) is so she can continue to be relevant down the home stretch of the film, when she's seen running around in a de-powered hospital. It just seemed perfunctory on the writers' part, and a shallow way to keep her involved. Come the sequel, they need to find her something interesting to be getting on with €“ Field got good mileage out of her Uncle Ben-inspired grief in the first, but she's moved on from that and the writers should look at a way to make her more relevant to the plot. Sure, she doesn't have to get kidnapped by every villain to ever figure out Spider-Man's identity, but let her do something. Otherwise, you're just wasting a damn fine actress.
