10 Characters Cruelly Recast Before They Made It Big

1. Hannibal Lecter (The Silence Of The Lambs)

Originally Played By: Brian Cox in Michael Mann's criminally underrated thriller Manhunter, in which the legendary character actor plays Dr. Lector (spelled as "Lecktor") and true to the most iconic interpretation of the character, he doesn't spend very long on screen. Though it took audiences and critics years to warm to the film, it is now regarded as a cult classic, and one of the main reasons for this is Cox's superb performance in the role. Recast As: Anthony Hopkins took the part over 5 years later, and as you can guess, I don't think too many people are angry about that. Though a few select purists might prefer the more down-to-Earth performance from Cox, Hopkins' sinewy, downright creepy turn resonated with audiences and critics alike, earning him the Academy Award for Best Actor. I have no doubt that Cox could have pulled off a brilliant Lector if they stuck with him, yet it's hard to argue with what Hopkins gave us. Are there any other cruelly miscast characters we missed? Let me know in the comments!
