10 Characters Recast In The Middle Of Shooting

4. Lita Grey - The Gold Rush

Charlie Chaplin may have become beloved for the puckish, almost childlike qualities of his "Little Tramp" character, but offscreen, the great artist's interests were decidedly more *cough* adult *cough*. Chaplin had first met Lita Grey as a child actress when she appeared in a small role near the end of The Kid, and when she was only 16 (or 15, depending on whose story you believe) he signed her to play his leading lady in The Gold Rush, the fiery dance hall girl named Georgia. Turns out Chaplin wasn't just attracted to his leading lady onscreen; the two indulged in an affair that resulted in the 15 or 16 (again, depends who you ask) year old Grey becoming pregnant with Chaplin's child, and Chaplin marrying her to avoid a no doubt enormous scandal.

Chaplin ultimately replaced Grey with actress Georgia Hale (with whom he also had an affair -- Chaplin himself wasn't nearly so shy around women as the Tramp was). The Gold Rush ended up a masterpiece, but Grey and Chaplin's relationship did not end nearly so well; during the production of Chaplin's next film, The Circus, their marriage dissolved in a vicious divorce case that smeared Chaplin's public name, nearly took away all his assets and caused his deep black hair to go shock white.
