2. Xtro (1983)

Sam and his son Tony are playing outside their house when Sam is abducted by aliens. Three years later, the aliens return and dispose of a half man/half alien which is hit by a car. The creature kills the car's inhabitants and impregnates a woman, who subsequently gives birth to an adult Sam (that's gotta hurt!) and dies. Sam is on a mission to find Tony and he tracks him down to London where he is living with his mother - Rachel and Joe, her boyfriend. Tony is exhibiting strange behaviour and wakes up covered in blood (which is not his own). Sam is reluctantly invited by Rachel to stay with them. Rather creepily, he eats Tony's pet snake's eggs. This freaks Tony out, but his dad calms him down and drinks his blood. As a result Tony has special powers and sends a life size toy to kill neighbours he doesn't like. Sam and Rachel take a trip to their old farm house, while leaving Tony in the care of the au pair. The au pair invites her boyfriend over for a quick shag. Tony doesn't like this and implants alien eggs inside her and kills her boyfriend with one of his giant toys. Lots of other world shenanigans happen to people and kill them. Sam and Tony as reunited at the end of the film but there are only grim prospects for Rachel. Xtro is an immensely enjoyable little British sci fi/horror effort that has never really gotten the praise it is due. Director Harry Bromley Davenport made two sequels to Xtro which were not as much fun as the original. Apparently, Davenport is looking to make Xtro 4. The special effects in the film are low budget but do the job. The initial monster is scary looking and effective as an instrument of fear. I loved the way Tony's toys became instruments of death. Yes it was cheesy, but it was amusing too. Another film that flirted around the Video Nasty scene, Xtro has a couple of dodgy scenes against women, but nothing as egregious as the likes of I Spit On Your Grave. Easily dismissed by trash by those who just see it as a low budget and therefore crappy film, Xtro has a lot to offer fans of horror based sci fi.
