10 Classic Cartoons That Were Mercilessly Killed On The Big Screen

6. Garfield

And while we anticipate just what treats are in store for Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, at least Bill Murray got his out of the way early in providing Garfield with his trademark mix of snark and apathy. The 'Garfield and Friends' cartoon series was a long-running and consistently good spin-off from the original comic strip - itself not without its charms- so why the need, in 2004, for a live-action film? Or, to be more precise, why the need for a film in which the only thing more uncomfortable than watching a CGI cat dancing to The Black Eyed Peas and James Brown is watching Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt pretend that they're having a good time? More to the point, why the need for a sequel: A Tail of Two Kitties? Murray has since expressed his regret in accepting the role (most memorably in his Zombieland cameo) and the story behind it has now entered film folklore. He mistakenly thought that the film's main writer Joel Cohen was one half of the Oscar-winning director duo the Coen Brothers, and only discovered the error once the film had wrapped. This doesn't quite explain why he then signed on for a sequel but, nevertheless, at least we can be thankful that there are no plans for a threequel. Yet.
