10 Classic Film Trailers That Show Us How It's Done

3. The Big Lebowski

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_GCRFRcWxA This trailer is akin to the Videodrome trailer in that it relies on imagery to show us what kind of movie this is. However, the Coen brothers take everything one step forward: there is no explanation of what ANY of these images mean. The trailer is about nothing, in and of itself; in a way, it€™s like the Dude€™s (Jeff Bridges) attitude throughout the film: just go on €œabiding€ and take whatever comes. Sometimes, life will throw some crazy stuff at you, as it does to the Dude throughout the course of the film, and as this trailer throws some wild images at us, such as Jeff Bridges dancing down the black-and-white-tiled staircase, John Turturro licking his bowling ball, and Sam Elliott as the mythic Stranger. This trailer, in that way, does more to show us the mood of a film and its style than any other on this list. However, like the rug in the film, there€™s one element that ties the trailer together, and that€™s Kenny Rogers and the First Edition€™s song €œJust Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition Was In)€. It adds an extra element of fun to what we€™re seeing, since it€™s making fun of the whole drug scene that it grew out of, and it also adds the psychedelic mood that this trailer is begging for.
