10 Comedy Sequels That Surprisingly Didn't Suck

10. 22 Jump Street

Now that€™s how you do it. The TV show 21 Jump Street was a decent-sized hit in the late-eighties and gave Johnny Depp a leg up in the early stages of his career, but there was no reason to believe that the concept of youthful-looking police officers working undercover in schools and colleges deserved to be resurrected. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller made light of such negativity, coaxing terrific performances out of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and shepherding the 21 Jump Street movie to a warm critical reception and over $200 million in global receipts. Apparently Lord and Miller don€™t like being told what they can and can€™t do. Earlier this year, they turned The Lego Movie €“ a film that could have easily been a soulless cash grab €“ into a franchise kick-starter and one of 2014€™s best-loved films. As for whether they could also deliver a comedy sequel that bears comparison with the original, they delivered in spades when 22 Jump Street arrived in cinemas six months ago. Every bit as funny as the film that came before it and even more successful, Lord and Miller confronted sequelitis head on by taking every opportunity to deride follow-ups as the noisy, cynical efforts they typically are. This subversion of expectations was a masterstroke and the result a triumph. Bring on 41 Jump Street: Magic School.

I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
