10 Comic Book Characters Who've Never Had A Decent Movie
4. Supergirl
The first female superhero film, Supergirl has one thing in common with Wonder Woman: the title character is never sexualized with lots of close-ups of her body. In absolutely no other way do the films bear comparison.
Released between the third and fourth Superman films (i.e. the worst ones), this camp oddity opens with Kara (Helen Slater) living on what looks like a space station wrapped in cling film where she somehow manages to lose her city’s main power source. Pursuing it through space and time, she arrives on Earth in full super costume and sets about recovering the source from mad witch Selena, played with nostril-flaring intensity by Faye Dunaway.
First, though, Supergirl cunningly disguises herself as Clark Kent’s cousin and enrolls at an all-girls school with Lois Lane’s younger sister (gee, do you think there’ll be some crossover with the Superman movies?) Cue lots of scenes where Supergirl’s mettle is tested with 1980s special effects, bungled slapstick and a badly miscast, woefully unhappy Peter Cook as Serena’s sidekick.
You’re better off watching the TV version.
