10 Comic Book Movie Performances That Ruined Actors' Careers

Frank Miller's creative vision is not to be questioned, but he struggles when he's charged with turning that stylistic commitment into moving pictures with substance, and that is the chief issue for The Spirit. It's a supermodel of a movie: pretty but vacant, and unfortunately for Gabriel Macht - for whom it was a big break - it sunk badly.

The pulpiness and humour is vaguely entertaining for a while, but Miller is too content with mirror gazing and self-congratulation, and Macht's performance is no more important than the end credit sequence. You're aware it's there, but it's not at all memorable.

What He Did Next

A succession of odd film choices that saw him creeping down the cast list was only allayed when a retreat to TV and Suits offered a chance to reinvent himself. No sign of a film rejuvenation yet.
