10 Common Criticisms Of 2001: A Space Odyssey And Why They Have No Validity

8. It's Boring

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 This is another one that centers on the very nature of the story. Just because something is slow doesn't make it boring and sometimes even the opposite is true and fast paced films can become boring because they have sub par stories. While it's perfectly ok to find 2001 boring it is not a fault of the movie or Kubrick's story. The narrative is delivered just the way it needs to be, in a very slow fashion, to emphasize the aim of Kubrick's direction, as I mentioned earlier. I can also just about guarantee that if you found the story to be boring than you weren't paying nearly enough attention to the finer details or you just don't care for virtuoso filmmaking. Both of those are perfectly legitimate by the way. Kubrick was trying to give the audience a realistic depiction of space and he succeeded flawlessly here by using the majesty of classical music to highlight the openness of space, while he also went the route of not over-glamorizing anything to make it more exciting than it actually would be. It's really amazing how he was able to subvert the typical Sci-Fi cliches of the time and create a movie that used the genre for much grander purposes than it was ever intended.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
