1. The Avengers (2012)
After the snooze fests that were
Thor and
Captain America (I took a 20 minute Odin nap in the middle of both), I thought we were done with subpar superhero films for a while. Enter
The Avengers. The movie was honestly too much of nothing. There were huge blocks of conversation that were absolutely pointless. Case in point: the Nick Fury Agent Coulson speech. Fury gets our Avengers to rally around a character, who up until this point meant absolutely nothing to anyone. Bonus points: Can anyone explain the role of Cobie Smulders? She wasnt really a valid character (I had to Google Nick Furys right hand woman to find the actresses name, but the camera lingered on her long enough that I began to wonder.) The drama drummed up to occupy the Avengers was contrived and out of place, driven by meaningless conversations about whether or not the AllSpark (excuse me, the Tesseract) should be used to create weapons. The end battle was a generic mass of CGI garbage that was about 15 minutes too long. I literally could have been watching any number of Michael Bay films (only the absence of Megan Fox and gratuitous butt shots kept me from believing it). I spent a large portion of the film wondering where Hawkeye kept getting arrows from. I understand that this was a summer blockbuster. That alone makes me cut it a little slack, but honestly, I just dont understand how it made a billion dollars. I also dont understand how the Black Widows presence in the final battle (a largely aerial one) wasn't like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
So there you have it. I haven't seen Dark Knight Rises yet, or else that would probably be on this list too. Did I miss anything? Are there any on this list that you feel strong enough to fight for?
