4. The Notebook (2004)
I think Nicholas Sparks is an evil genius. Its like he sits down to write a book and wonders, How can I make women cry and write unrealistic romantic relationships that make theirs look like cold shells? Then, the books are turned into films that are cast by impossibly gorgeous men (well played, Mr. Gosling) who are sensitive and into grand gestures. I almost (almost) cant blame my fellow females for falling for his very attractive bait. Im selective about my romantic movies. I need them to mean something. They need to be well written (
When Harry Met Sally, Bringing up Baby, Sabrina), be truly epic (
Titanic,Gone With the Wind), or just capture the fundamental weirdness/transience/heartache of falling in love (
Eternal Sunshine, Before Sunrise, The Princess Bride). Even now, Im struggling to recall what actually happened in
The Notebook. Theres nothing memorable about this film. The writing is subpar, Yes it wasnt over, it still isnt over. Thats some great stuff. Also James Garner spends the whole day telling Jenna Rowlands their love story so that shell remember him for a couple of minutes? Does he do this every day? What do they usually do when she remembers, hold hands and reminisce? Finally, can anyone tell me why James Marsden never gets the girl(
Superman Returns, Enchanted, X-Men)?
