10 Controversial Movies Everyone Misunderstood

1. A Serbian Film

A Serbian Film is without question one of the most shocking films ever made, yet almost immediately upon its premiere, a cult of the film's legendary depravity began to build, with critics and sensationalist media indicting it for apparently eroticising rape, murder and paedophilia.

And though A Serbian Film features graphic depictions of all those things, depiction of course does not equal endorsement, and director Srđan Spasojević certainly doesn't present a flattering or sexually appealing rendition - if such is even possible - of those acts.

The movie is actually a darker-than-dark satire about political correctness in the Serbian film industry, an attempt to create a film that is the exact opposite of the bland films funded by the Serbian state.

And so, whether or not you believe this satire was executed well, the film has more going on than just relentless shock imagery - to say nothing of the fact that it's surprisingly well-acted and technically sharp.

Today the film is largely dismissed as torture porn nonsense, even if it in fact has a far more pointed political goal on its mind.
